Newsletter – 18th October 2019

October 18, 2019/0 Comments/in Archived, News /by Digilari

Dear Sir/Madam,

September has been and gone and we are nearly through October! 9 working weeks until Christmas! Hasn’t the year flown by!

With lots of our clients travelling to various parts of Australia, we have been receiving feedback on the devastating effect that the drought is having not only on farmers but also the communities in regional Australia. We would encourage everyone who is thinking about going on a trip, that instead of passing through every town, that they stop in and spend a few dollars which will support the businesses in these towns.

Recently, a few of our clients from the Salvation Army at Bundamba travelled to Mitchell in the state’s west to deliver care packages to 50 farmers in the district. We were told that the farmers and their families were very appreciative of the gifts and also the chance to just talk to someone.

Rod’s comment:

It would appear that we may finally have a resolution to Brexit, which if resolved would remove one of the major influencers on global economic instability. This would leave the US/China trade embargo and ongoing Middle East tensions as the remaining two major disrupters in global sharemarkets. Without a resolution to the US/China trade issue, we expect ongoing volatility in the sharemarkets and returns of between 5-10% over the next 12 months.

Until next month,

Emma

Dear Sir/Madam,

Once again, not a lot to report from our office since our last newsletter. Life is flying by too quickly!

We have another travel story for you this month. Our clients, K & J enjoyed a trip down south a few months ago with their caravan and these were the highlights:

  • Lightning Ridge free thermal pool to relax the weary body. Black opals, arts and crafts and the Glengarry Hilton Pub.
  • Bathurst – we did a lap of the mountain in 8min 5 sec pulling a caravan.
  • Kangaroo Valley – free camp, wombats, an amazing place.
  • Wollongong Sea Cliff Bridge, a great walk.
  • And camping by the beautiful Hawksbury River.
  • Just a few places we visited in this beautiful land that we live.

Rod’s comment:

Since the end of July, we have seen the Australian sharemarket drop 5+% and many overseas markets have dropped up to 10%. There seems to be a certain amount of concern by the general public that we are heading towards another global financial crisis type event fuelled by the Trump/China trade war. Although I cannot guarantee we won’t see a significant drop in markets, I will be surprised if we see the 35+% drop we experienced in 2007/2008. Fundamentally many of the worlds largest economies including Australia are travelling okay with very few of the indicators of a looming financial crisis that were evident at the end of 2007. That’s not to say that we won’t have a lot of volatility until the trade issue and other matters are resolved (if they ever are).

If anyone has any individual concerns or questions, please contact the office to have a chat with Rod.

Until next month,

Emma

Dear Sir/Madam,

Not a lot to report from the office since our last newsletter. We had one of the busiest ends to a financial year’s for a long time with a large number of super contributions to process.

Emma and our ‘old faithful’ Monica (ex-staff) recently supported our client Gayle again with her annual bus trip for the Leukaemia Foundation. The girls took in the beautiful Scenic Rim with a morning tea stop at Moogerah Dam, a quick stop at the Scenic Rim Brewery at Mt Alford and lunch in Boonah. They then headed to Little Pee Dee Nursery at Kalbar before our final stop at Paradine Estate Wine in Harrisville. Always a great day exploring our surrounding areas and shopping up a storm!

Rod’s comment:

The Australian sharemarket has finally reached levels achieved just before the GFC hit in late 2007. This has taken far longer than many experts had predicted. “Let’s hope it is a case of good things come to those who wait.”

The US sharemarket continues to be the powerhouse of world sharemarkets despite Mr Trump’s best efforts (tweets) to undermine this. Overall, I am expecting sharemarkets to provide solid rather than high returns over the next 12 months.

Until next month,

Emma

Dear Sir/Madam,

Another enjoyable golf day but with a change of venue resulted in a smaller turn out than normal. The “hole in one” did not go off once again but the drives were closer to the pin than previous years. Hopefully, next year will be the year where someone will get the $10,000! Some pictures of our day are on our Facebook page here https://www.facebook.com/totalwealthmgt/.

We had a special breakfast last Friday to celebrate Emma putting up with Rod for the last 10 years!! Here’s to the next 10!

Now that the Federal election is over, hopefully we will see political stability for the next 3 years enabling the Coalition to pass legislation which will reduce taxes with the ultimate aim of stimulating the economy. In contrast the State Government budget appears to only promise a burgeoning public sector spend but not delivering jobs at the coalface such as more police, nurses and teachers.

I expect ongoing volatility in sharemarkets for the remainder of 2019. However sharemarkets still appear to offer best returns on the back of strong dividends compared to low cash rates and fixed interest. We’ve attached an article which provides some interesting insights into the results of long term investing in property versus shares in Australia.

Dear Sir/Madam,

Only 11 days till the Federal election and we won’t have to listen to or watch any more political advertisements! Sharemarkets have been relatively quiet although the inability of the US and China to reach a trade agreement has the potential to have a negative impact on the sharemarkets in the short term.

We have our annual Golf Day fast approaching on Friday 24th May 2019 and we need to finalise our numbers ASAP.

This year, we have had a change of venue and it will be at McLeod Golf Club at Mt Ommaney. Invitations have been sent to our golfing clients and other interested parties. We have a number of single players and couples so if you are interested and having trouble getting a team of 4 together please let us know so we can help to finalise teams and tee off times.

Until next month,

Emma

Dear Sir/Madam,

This year is passing us by too quickly and Easter is upon us again!

Last Friday, the TWM staff had their annual flu shots, as there are no sick days allowed in this office!! Rod would like to recommend to any of clients to go see Phuong from Priceline Pharmacy at Riverlink for your flu shot as we did not feel a thing!

By now, our Centrelink clients should have received a letter notifying them that their Age Pension has increased from the 20th March 2019 and the Government also paid a one-off Energy Assistance payment as at 2nd April 2019. Other beneficial changes to the Age Pension recipients include an increase in the Work Bonus for those that are still working and an expansion of the Pension Loan Scheme.

There was a little mistake in our last newsletter – the date for our annual Golf Day! It is coming up next month on Friday 24th May 2019. We have been sending out invitations so if you have not received one and you would be interested in playing or entering a team, please call the office.

Until next month,

Emma

Newsletter – 15th Mar 2019

March 15, 2019/0 Comments/in Archived, News /by Digilari

Dear Sir/Madam,

We are a little busy this month, hence the tardiness of our newsletter!

Rod wanted to start this newsletter off with his market update:

Over the last 6 months markets have experienced extreme volatility which some of you may have noticed if you have been checking your account balance. The last 3 months of 2018 was the worst finish to global sharemarkets since the great depression. On the other hand, the first 2 ½ months of 2019 has seen the best start to a calendar year on financial markets for 30 years. While markets have rallied, we are expecting continued volatility throughout the rest of this year.

In staff news, Monica has decided to take the big leap and start her own business. She will be doing the same work for us but also for other advisers. We wish her all the best and look forward to continuing our working relationship with her.

We also have our annual Golf Day coming up on Friday 24th March 2019. This year, we have had a change of venue and it will be at McLeod Golf Club at Mt Ommaney. Invitations will be sent to our golfing clients and if anyone else is interested in entering a team, please call the office.

Until next month,

Emma

February 7, 2019/0 Comments/in Archived, News /by Digilari

Dear Sir/Madam,

Happy (belated) New Year to all of our clients!

The office is well and truly back into the swing of things after a relaxing holiday break with our families over the Christmas period. To celebrate another year, we enjoyed a lovely afternoon watching the horses.

As mentioned in one of our previous newsletters, we have decided that each month we will include a story regarding one of our clients. If you have a story or photos to share, please get in touch and we will include them in future newsletters.

This month, Rod would like to share with you some pictures that our clients, Joe and Raeleen took when they travelled last year to see the wildflowers in WA.

The global and domestic issues that Rod raised in the December newsletter are continuing to create volatility in economies and sharemarkets. The good news is that sharemarkets stopped dropping at the end of December and so far 2019 has been a positive one although there is still some way to go before markets have fully recovered from what happened in the last few months of 2018. Rod is expecting continued volatility and most likely returns of less than 10% for this calendar year.

Until next month,

Emma

Dear Emma ,

Christmas is nearly upon us and we have been very busy catching up with clients.

Today, we received a gift from one of clients, Bob, who made our new reindeer decorations for the office.  They have taken pride of place on the front desk for everyone to see!

Dear Sir/Madam,

After being away at a conference in South Australia, Rod is back on deck and the office is busy again leading up to Christmas which is less than 8 weeks away!

We have decided that each month we will try to include a story regarding one of our clients. If you have a story or photos to share, please get in touch and we will include them in future newsletters.

This month, Rod would like to give you an insight into the work life of one of our clients, Evan who is a truck driver for a local company. Every Sunday morning, Evan loads fertiliser from the Brisbane port and drives to Townsville where he unloads this on Monday. He is then in Winton by Tuesday to pick up a load of gypsum and back in Ipswich by Wednesday. All up his total journey is approximately 4,300kms. Evan tells us that the gross weight of truck and trailers fully loaded is 101 tonne. This is Evan’s truck below:

Recently, someone we know has had a melanoma removed. This is our reminder for everyone that with the summer season upon us, to make sure you slip, slop, slap and to get your regular skin check.

For all our Colonial First State clients, we have been advised that they are in the process of converting to online statements. This will affect a few of our clients over the next few months. As with our MLC clients, if you prefer not to have to login, you are welcome to contact us and we can provide these statements to you by email.

Until next month,

Emma
